Easy Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe that Smells Like Fall! (1)

I can’t get enough of cooler days, fall leaves, and crisp apples.

Unfortunately, in Texas, even though stores start stocking fall merchandise in late July, we don’t get cooler days and falling leaves until November.

While my friends who live in cooler places are posting on Instagram about all the fun they’re having with outdoor apple STEM activities, me and my kids are stuck inside sweating inside even though the AC is blasting at full speed.

Apple Slime Chemistry Lesson Plan

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Active Time: 30 minutes

Additional Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 25 minutes

Difficulty: easy

You can transform your simple apple slime recipe into a full chemistry lesson plan for elementary by using this slime chemistry lesson plan!

Materials

  • Elmer's white school glue
  • White shaving cream
  • Liquid laundry starch
  • Red food coloring
  • Apple-scented oil or fragrance (make sure it is safe for skin contact)
  • Faux leaves
  • Craft twigs

Tools

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stirring utensils
  • Plastic containers for slime storage
  • Plastic aprons or old shirts to protect clothing

Instructions

Here is a simple lesson plan you can use to teach the chemistry of slime making to students in 2nd through 5th grade.

Lesson Objective

Students will explore chemical reactions and polymerization by creating fluffy apple-scented slime using common household ingredients.

They will engage in hands-on experimentation while learning about the properties of substances and the basics of chemical bonding.

Introduction (10 minutes)

Explain that chemistry is all about how different substances can change and react with each other.

Introduce the concept of polymers, which are long chains of molecules, and how they contribute to the slimy texture of slime.Easy Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe that Smells Like Fall! (72)

Making the Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe (20 minutes)

Distribute mixing bowls, measuring cups, and spoons to each student or group.

Instruct students to pour equal parts of white school glue and white shaving cream into their mixing bowls. The amount can vary, but ½ cup of each is a good starting point.Easy Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe that Smells Like Fall! (73)

Add a few drops of red soap dye to mimic apple skin color. Add a few drops of apple-scented fragrance to the recipe.

Have the students mix their ingredients until combined.

Explain that liquid laundry starch contains chemicals that help turn the glue and shaving cream mixture into slime.Easy Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe that Smells Like Fall! (74)

Instruct students to add their 1/2 cup of liquid laundry starch a little at a time while stirring continuously.

They should observe the mixture becoming thicker and less sticky as the starch is added.

Once the slime has formed, students can remove it from the mixing bowl and start kneading it with their hands.Easy Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe that Smells Like Fall! (75)

Discuss the texture and properties of the slime, focusing on its stretchiness, elasticity, and ability to change shape.

Observations and Discussions (15 minutes)

Gather the class and discuss what they observed during the slime-making process.

Encourage questions like "What happened when we mixed the ingredients?" and "How did the slime change as we added starch?"Easy Fluffy Apple Slime Recipe that Smells Like Fall! (76)

Explain that the chemical reaction between the glue and starch created the polymer chains, which give slime its unique properties.

STEM Extension Activities

  • Have students investigate what happens when they add more or less laundry starch to the mixture.
  • Challenge them to experiment with different scents or colors and observe any changes in the slime's texture.

Student Assessment

  • Observe students' engagement and participation during the activity.
  • Encourage them to ask questions and share their observations during discussions.
  • Check for students' understanding of the basic chemistry behind polymer chains and why slime forms.
