The 100th: Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden — The Greatest Arena Run of All Time

It was Dec. 14, 1978, when Billy Joel performed at New York City’s Madison Square Garden for the first time. A ticket for an orchestra seat cost $11.50. His sixth studio album, 52nd Street, was released that fall and was his first record to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. More than 45 years later, Joel has become as much of a fixture at MSG as the New York Knicks or Rangers, and his current residency there began in January 2014. This two-hour special, taped March 28 at Joel’s 100th consecutive monthly performance at the venue, is the artist’s first ever concert to air on a broadcast TV network. His 150th and final show at the Garden is scheduled for July 25. — Ryan A. Berenz

Turner Classic Movies debuted 30 years ago today, on April 14, 1994. The network is celebrating all day (starting very early) with a marathon of films featuring historical introductions from beloved host Robert Osborne, who passed away in 2017. Throughout the day, fans will be treated to new insights from TCM’s five current hosts to give context to Osborne’s intros. The day’s centerpiece will feature an airing of Gone With the Wind (1939), which was the first film to be broadcast and introduced on TCM. Among other highlights are films that were featured as part of Osborne’s “Bob’s Picks” segment, including his intros to them: Wild Bill Hickok Rides (1942), a pick in November 1996; The Guardsman (1931) and The Pirate (1948), both April 2011 picks; and North by Northwest (1959, a pick in April 2015).

Catch a Classic!
Turner Classic Movies continues its monthlong Monday salute to the centennial of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, the iconic Hollywood studio that was founded on April 17, 1924, with a 24-hour lineup focusing mostly on MGM classics from the 1940s and ’50s, including a few of the beloved musicals for which the studio became famous. The day begins with the 1943 war movie Bataan and concludes early tomorrow morning with Ben-Hur (1959), the religious epic that won 11 of the 12 Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Charlton Heston and Best Director for William Wyler (only Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King have matched Ben-Hur in the number of Oscar wins). In between these are several other popular and/or acclaimed MGM titles from this era, including The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946), the legendary film noir led by Lana Turner and John Garfield; Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), the famed musical starring MGM staple Judy Garland; Father of the Bride (1950), the original comedy featuring Best Actor nominee Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor; another iconic musical, Singin’ in the Rain (1952), led by Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds; and more. Airing in between the movies later this evening is the third and final part of the Emmy-winning 1992 documentary MGM: When the Lion Roars, a history of the studio narrated by Patrick Stewart.

The wonderfully memorable film scores of composer Henry Mancini are celebrated on Turner Classic Movies in a 12-film lineup airing today on what would have been his 100th birthday (he was born Enrico Nicola Mancini in Maple Heights, Ohio, on April 16, 1924; he died in Los Angeles on June 14, 1994, at age 70). When one of the kids (Lyon Daniels) discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real, no one believes him except his Great-Aunt Lucinda (Charlayne Woodard), who implores him to find the pages of her father’s field guide to these creatures and protect them from the murderous ogre, Mulgarath (Christian Slater).

Now, they’re meeting face-to-face for the very first time and sharing a house together for three weeks to see if their internet love can survive off the screen and in real life.

“Escape” Movies

The entertainment on Turner Classic Movies tonight is escapist on a few levels — it’s a lineup of five movies involving escapes during World War II or the Cold War. Starting things off, naturally, is the most famous one: The Great Escape (1963), director John Sturges’ legendary feature that fictionalizes a real-life mass escape by Allied POWs from a German prison camp during World War II. Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough and Charles Bronson lead the cast. The next film is set in pre-war Nazi Germany: Escape (1940), featuring Robert Taylor as an American who tries to free his mother (played by Russian American actress Nazimova) from a concentration camp. Norma Shearer and Conrad Veidt also star. Two Cold War-era movies follow: Escape From East Berlin (1962), an American-West German thriller, and Escape From the Iron Curtain (1956, aka Flight From Vienna). The lineup goes back to World War II as it concludes early tomorrow with I Escaped From the Gestapo (1943), led by Dean Jagger, John Carradine and Mary Brian.

Robert Montgomery plays Raymond Chandler’s famous private investigator Philip Marlowe (although the character’s first name is spelled with two l’s here, for some reason) in this 1947 film noir adaptation of Chandler’s 1943 novel, The Lady in the Lake. Montgomery also directed the film, and he brought an interesting creative touch to it: Marlowe is mostly (aside from a couple of reflections) unseen by the audience; the tale is told via his first-person point of view, with the camera seeing what he does. Coupled with the fact that the film has almost no instrumental soundtrack, this production was especially unique for, and certainly ahead of, its time. The technique is mostly pulled off well, although it does take some getting used to. More confusing is the convoluted mystery plot, but that kind of comes with the territory with Chandler. Costarring with Montgomery are Audrey Totter, Lloyd Nolan and Tom Tully.
